Serological investigations in children with colonized Spitz-Holter valves.

چکیده
It has been found that children with hydrocephalus, whose Spitz-Holter valves are colonized with Staph. albus, have an antibody to this organism in their serum. Children without colonized shunts have little or no such antibody. A test for this antibody is described, and its use in such cases is discussed.

Treatment of hydrocephalus using saphenous vein homograft.
The literature abounds with a multitude of surgical procedures for hydrocephalus, and CSF has been shunted in every conceivable manner. The very number of these operations is an eloquent testimony to their inadequacy. In 1908, Payr (quoted by Benson et al., 1962) described an operation whereby the CSF was shunted from the lateral ventricle into the jugular vein, with the help of tubes made from...
متن کاملShunt failure caused by valve collapse.
Shunt failure due to collapse of the Mini-Holter valve was observed 13 times in 11 out of 179 children with an implanted Mini-Holter ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) or ventriculo-atrial (VA) shunt during a 10 year period. Intussusception of the proximal or distal end of the valve thus caused a shunt failure rate of 6% of the children in this series. Two children experienced this complication twice. ...
متن کاملPulmonary Embolism in Children.
Pulmonary embolism is generally believed to be rare in childhood, and my own survey of the published material suggests that under 50 cases have so far been recorded. Stevenson and Stevenson (1949), who surveyed published reports from all over the world and reported a case in 1949, could find only 30 reports of which only 16 had had complete autopsies. Not all cases, however, are fatal. Cashman ...

متن کاملContribution of systematic serological testing in diagnosis of infective endocarditis.
Despite progress with diagnostic criteria, the type and timing of laboratory tests used to diagnose infective endocarditis (IE) have not been standardized. This is especially true with serological testing. Patients with suspected IE were evaluated by a standard diagnostic protocol. This protocol mandated an evaluation of the patients according to the modified Duke criteria and used a battery of...
